It gets its name from the Arabic name: abu -l - mosk, means the father of musk; the musk scented seeds. In Egypt the seeds are chewed as a stomachic, and to sweeten the breath. It is also used as an aphrodisiac.

First proved by Dr Luis G. de Lagaretta of Mexico. Abelmoschus has aphrodisiac, antispasmodic, carminative, demulcent, diuretic.

Clinically used in Addison's disease, anaemia, lymphangitis, of the reticuloendothelial system, glaucoma, and asthma. It has been an antidote to the venoms of insects, spiders, and snakes. It is used in gonorrheal cystitis and urethritis.
