CASE TAKING

My experience of homeopathy included treatment to assist me in finding relief from grief and depression stemming from the successive deaths of six people who were cherished and intimate friends and relations. This experience demonstrated for me not only how homeopathy can work as an effective adjunct therapy to psychotherapy but also how the homeopathic intake method can provide a psychological profile based on specific emotional, cognitive, and somatic characteristics. Homeopathy seeks to individualize treatment through a synergy with the patient created by asking and exploring questions related to personal inclinations, preferences, environment, reactions, moods, distastes, fears, pursuits, and physical reactions (Smith, 1989). I believe that the profile that emerges from this method can provide the therapist and the client with invaluable information that points toward avenues for exploring the psyche and how the internal world of an individual interacts with, affects, and is affected by the external world.

ABSTRACT

Using heuristic and hermeneutic research methodologies, this thesis explores the viability of using the information-gathering technique of the homeopathic intake questionnaire as a tool for depth psychotherapists, including those who are faced with constraints such as limited sessions or clients unfamiliar with the depth psychological approach. The author documents her struggle with compound grief and her experience of seeking a new and reinvigorating perspective through a healing modality complimentary to psychotherapy. This search led to discovering a holistic, synergistic, and alchemically based modality that has depth related concepts and goals. Through the process of working with the homeopathic questionnaire, the author was able to bring greater understanding and fresh perspectives to her own psychotherapeutic treatment and to her work as a therapist in training.
