Rabindranath Tagore, who was a poet, philosopher, playwright, composer,Nobel prize winner, father of Rabindra Sangeet and above all a great humanist. But many may not know that he was a self-taught homeopath and practised homeopathy with astonishing results and dedication.

Tagore had once surprised a qualified British doctor with his knowledge of homeopathy. A patient at his Jorasanko house in Calcutta was in a serious condition suffering from excruciating pain due to an abscess. The allopathic doctor preferred to spend the night at the patient's bedside keeping a watch over her condition. Tagore asked him whether there was no allopathic medicine to give relief to the patient. The doctor said: ``Unless the abscess bursts or is drained by an incision, there is no other way in allopathy to give the patient any relief.'' Later, the doctor fell asleep and when he woke up he was surprised to find the patient much better. Tagore had given some medicines which provided instant relief to the patient. The doctor took a list of homeopathic medicines and a few books from Tagore before leaving.
