Fructans is the general term for any carbohydrate with fructose polymers. They are present in significant amounts in various edible fruits and vegetables , eg. asparagus, artichoke, garlic, leek onion, banana and chicory roots..

Fructans have a bifidogenic effect, in the sense they stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli , while decreasing the concentrations of E.coli and Clostridia. They also help increase absorption of some important minerals, namely calcium and magnesium, lower fasting blood glucose and bring about reduced lipogenesis in the liver.
