Junk food

Almost everyone knows that junk food is bad for them, however many still consume too much. Many people eat some form of junk food every day, and are not consuming this food as a treat anymore. They have gotten into a habit, or addition which is hard to get out of. Being trapped in a junk food habit long term can make you forget how good you would feel by giving it up. So what are the benefits of giving up junk food?

Improved Health
Giving up junk food will make more room for nutrient dense foods such as vegetables, fruits and wholegrains. These foods are high in vitamins and minerals which your body needs. Junk food on the other hand is often empty calories. Junk food provides high amounts of fats, sugar and salt, however is deficient in other nutrients. By eating too much junk food you are pushing out nutrient dense foods and are likely to be missing out on important vitamins and minerals.

This follows on from improving you health. By giving up junk food and increasing nutrient dense foods you will notice an increase in energy. You should feel much clearer and more awake. You don’t realise how much junk food sucks you energy levels until you give it up!

Weight Loss
For those who want to lose weight, giving up junk food will reduce the amount of calories consumed which should result in weight loss. Many junk foods such as chips, fast food and baked goods are very high in calories and contribute significantly to weight gain.

Reduced Risk of Disease
High consumption of junk food increases the risk for many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and kidney problems. This is due to the high saturated fat, salt and sugar contained in these foods. By giving up junk food you can reduce the risk of these diseases and improve your overall health by taking on a healthy diet.

Giving up junk food doesn’t have to be a life long thing. However breaking the habit by going cold turkey for a few weeks is a great way to start. You will get the benefit of experiencing how it feels to eat a healthy diet as well as detoxing your body which should prevent you from going back to old habits. One of the most important ways to give up junk food is to get rid of all the bad food in your house and to not buy anymore. If it’s in the house you’ll eat it; so out of sight, out of mind is a good approach. Once you have made it through the first few days it will get easier, and after a few weeks you can enjoy junk food again as it should be; an occasional treat.

I became interested in health and nutrition many years ago due to my own health issues. This led me into a degree in nutrition and human biology. Once I completed the degree I felt like I wanted to learn a more holistic approach and began to study naturopathy. This is how I was introduced to homeopathy and began using it on myself and my family members to create a more holistic nutritional form of treatment.
